The Internal Medicine Preliminary Track is a one year program providing broad exposure to internal medicine. It generally serves as a prerequisite for those individuals going into certain subspecialties such as Anesthesiology, Radiology, Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation or Ophthalmology. The year is arranged a bit differently than the first year of the Categorical program here.
PGY-1’s do four or five four-week blocks of ward medicine, 1-2 rotations of Medical ICU, and usually do six additional rotations (selectives) chosen from most of the medical subspecialties (these are overwhelmingly consult services) and Emergency Medicine. While on the wards, there is no overnight call, although during the academic year each Medicine Intern(Preliminary, Categorical, and Primary Care) does do overnight coverage about 12 times. The Preliminary people help cover General Medicine clinics when they are not on the wards. During these non-ward times, it averages out to one half day per week. Finally, there are situations in which an elective is scheduled rather than one of the six more conventional selections mentioned above. This is considered carefully based on an individual’s career issues/interests plus the overall flexibility (or lack thereof) in the collective schedule.
