Dr. Sadi Fontaine established the OMS Training Program in 1926. At that time, the training consisted of a one-year internship. In 1967, the program expanded to 48 months in duration.
Today, this four-year program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation and accepts three residents each year. The Alameda County Medical Center Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is under the direction of The University of The Pacific.
Training is rigorous and includes extensive experience in:
- Inpatient conscious sedation and general anesthesia
- Outpatient conscious sedation and general anesthesia
- Dentoalveolar surgery
- Complex maxillofacial trauma
- Facial reconstructive surgery
- Orthognathic maxillofacial surgery
- Oral pathology
- Preprosthetic surgery
- Osseointegrated implants
- Facial cosmetic surgery
- Temporomandibular joint surgery
The didactic curriculum includes extensive formal courses in all aspects of Oral / Maxillofacial Surgery including:
- Head and Neck Anatomy
- Physical Diagnosis
- Implantology
- Oral Pathology
- Pharmacology
- Anesthesiology
Weekly evening conferences featuring guest lecturers are presented on an on-going basis. Rotations to affiliated institutions are included in the four year training curriculum to provide the residents with a broad experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The program alumni have formed the Sadi Fontaine Academy, which sponsors a nationally recognized annual education seminar. During the seminar, the Highland General Hospital Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery residents are honored guests.
