Alameda County is one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the United States. The ethnic and social diversity of the East Bay brings to the hospital many patients with limited proficiency in English. The Medical Center’s outstanding Interpreter Services are one of our most unique features. Our staff of trained medical interpreters provides language interpretation in two dozen languages!
ACMC was the first hospital system in the U.S. to undertake a large-scale implementation of two-way video for language interpretation. Our Videoconferencing Medical Interpretation (VMI) system uses simple, portable video equipment in the clinic setting, to make language interpretation available at more sites, in more languages, with less waiting time.
When an interpreter is not available in person or via video, or for other language needs, Language Line (telephone) services are provided.
The Alameda County Medical Center has Medical Interpreters available in the following languages:

The Interpreter-Translation Services Office is open Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 am – 9:00 pm. Not all languages are available after 5:00pm.
