At Alameda Health System (AHS), the holiday season is a time to embrace the spirit of service and giving back to the community through our annual Hope for the Holidays program.
“Hope for the Holidays is important because it brings us together to support patients who are struggling or facing challenges,” said Jeanette Hernandez, system care management project coordinator. “To me it means the beginning of future blessings and the hope of brighter days ahead.”
This year AHS employees have once again demonstrated their generosity and compassion by donating gift cards to support more than 100 families in need. Staff volunteered to distribute the cards at the Wilma Chan Highland Hospital Campus (WCHHC) on Friday, December 13.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the children and families smile with joy as they receive their gift cards,” said Marco Hernandez, health advocate program coordinator in care management. “As the program name reflects, it truly does bring hope for the holidays.”
AHS staff’s dedication to service is evident beyond the holidays and shines throughout the year, making a meaningful difference, both within our walls and beyond.
At the Fairmont Café, Food Service Worker, Jermilya Captain, carries her compassion beyond the workplace. She volunteers twice a month with Oakland’s Glad Tidings Community Church, providing meals, warm clothing and essentials to the unhoused.
As the months get colder months and the needs increase, Captain finds fulfillment in her efforts. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help those in need,” she shared. “Their gratitude is a true blessing and a reminder of how meaningful even small gestures can be.”
This time of year is one of celebration and joy, yet it’s also a chance to remember and support those facing hardships. For those interested in volunteering, consider exploring local opportunities to make a difference.
If you are interested in donating your time during the holidays and throughout the year, our Public Affairs and Community Engagement (PACE) team has developed a list of volunteer opportunities with our community partners in Alameda County.
