Emergency Medicine

Founded in 1980, the Emergency Medicine Residency program at Highland General Hospital trains 10 housestaff per year in a PGY I-IV format. It is fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education.

The Emergency Medicine faculty consists of fourteen full-time physicians and several part-time attendings, all residency trained and board certified in Emergency Medicine. There are also two ultrasound fellows, and soon a new International Emergency Medicine fellow. Together, they provide 42-49 hours of continuous staff attending coverage in the Emergency Department (ED) every day.

Highland has been a designated Trauma Center since 1986. Alameda County has a well-developed Emergency Medical Services system; the ED at Highland operates a paramedic base station. Emergency Medicine is a full and independent hospital department, operating with its own budget and on par with other hospital departments.

The Highland General Hospital population is largely indigent and urban, though we do receive referrals from throughout Alameda County. The annual census is approximately 72,000+. While most pediatric emergencies are seen at the nearby Children's Hospital Oakland, the pediatric census has been increasing with the recent increase of pediatric services. Residents rotate at Children's Hospital at Oakland for five months throughout residency.

In May 2004, the Emergency Medicine Department moved to new quarters in the new $80 million Critical Care and Clinics Building (CCCB). The new department is now approximately 40,000 square feet in size, making it one of the most up-to-date and spacious Emergency Departments in the nation. This includes over 30,000 feet of patient care space (55 beds), two x-ray units, a stat lab, and a CT scanner. This beautiful new space, equipped with an integrated informatics system, ensures that we will be prepared to serve our community and its needs for years to come.
